Some patios just sit there. Covered slab, a couple of posts, nothing pulling it together. That's exactly what we were working with here - an open, unfinished patio that had good bones but zero personality.
What this homeowner needed was some structure. Something to define the space, add a little privacy, and make it actually feel like somewhere you'd want to spend time. So we got to work on a full pony wall and accent wall installation using fresh cedar. Two very different wall styles - a solid vertical board pony wall with a flat top cap running the perimeter, and a horizontal slat accent wall on the side that lets in light and air while still creating a visual boundary. The combination does a lot of heavy lifting for a space like this.
The detail work is what separates a solid build from a sloppy one. The corner wraps are tight, the top cap sits flat and clean, and the horizontal slats on the accent section are evenly spaced all the way up. The dark-stained posts tie into the existing structure and frame everything well. It's the kind of consistency that makes a build look intentional rather than thrown together.
Worth noting - this was photographed pre-stain, so the cedar is still in its natural state. Once we come back and apply stain, the wood will deepen in color and be protected from the elements. That's actually one of our favorite parts of a build like this. The natural cedar already looks great, and a quality stain takes it to a whole other level while adding years of life to the wood.
A patio upgrade like this doesn't require a full remodel. The right woodwork - built and finished correctly - can completely change how a space feels and functions. Whether you've got a bare slab or something that just needs a little more character, there's usually a straightforward path to getting it where you want it.
