A lot of homeowners don't realize that bad soffits and fascia can completely derail a gutter install. If the boards are rotted, sagging, or falling apart, there's nothing solid to anchor the gutters to. You end up with a drainage system that won't hold - and that's a much bigger headache down the road.
Here's what we were working with on this one. The soffit had a significant section that had completely given way, exposing the wood framing underneath. There was also visible deterioration and separation along the fascia line - the kind of damage that builds up slowly over time, often made worse by moisture getting in through small gaps and just sitting there.
Before any gutter work could happen, we had to get the structure right. That meant pulling out the damaged soffit material, addressing the underlying framing, and replacing the fascia so everything was clean and solid. No shortcuts. You can't build a reliable drainage system on a weak foundation.
Once the repair work was done, the difference was clear. Fresh soffit panels, a clean fascia line, and a surface that's actually ready to support proper gutters. That's how drainage protection is supposed to work - from the outside in, starting with the structure itself.
Skipping the prep and just hanging gutters over damaged boards is one of the most common mistakes we see. It looks fine for a little while, then fails when it matters most. Getting the soffit and fascia right first isn't extra work - it's the work that makes everything else last.
